The Heroes in Our Midst: How The PARC Supports Puppies on their Journey to Becoming Service Dogs
At The PARC, we know how special the bond is between a person with a disability and their service dog. Since 2011, we’ve partnered with Canine Companions for Independence® (CCI) to provide over $120,000 in wellness and emergency veterinary care to the service dogs in training raised in Fort Worth.
What makes this partnership even more impactful is that the puppies are raised by female inmates at the Federal Medical Center Carswell. These women help teach the puppies obedience and other essential skills, preparing them for their future roles as service dogs for individuals with disabilities.
We care for each class of puppies until they are 18 months old, providing essential medical support before they move on to advanced training. To date, we’ve cared for over 100 puppies.
This program benefits everyone involved. Inmates gain purpose and skills, while the puppies become heroes, ready to provide independence and companionship to individuals with disabilities. We’re proud to play a part in this life-changing journey, helping these special puppies on their journey to become priceless companions for adults and children in need.
